Social Media and Law

On Friday, my social media strategies class visited another class to sit in on a lecture about social media and law.

Social media and the law can be a complicated topic. In the lecture we attended, the instructor focused on privacy regarding social media and law. According to americanbar.org, it is important to remember that "too much published information can and will present obstacles when circumstances change" (americanbar.org).

The FTC has been the protector of privacy in regards to social media (americanbar.org). However, laws still have some catching up to do when it comes to social media. States are trying to (some have already) put laws in place regarding social media and privacy, since social media is growing and becoming more important to people's lives.

In regards to inapporpriate photos that are distributed without content, there are a number of factors that have to be taken into consideration before legal action can be taken. Age must be considered, as well as the content of the photo.

For more information about photos that are distributed on social media without consent and to see states that have laws about the issues, visit https://www.texastribune.org/2015/08/21/texas-law-criminalizing-revenge-porn-goes-effect/.
